Staining is an art. The end finish is always dependant on the type of wood to be stained, how dense the wood is, how dry the wood is, how the wood reacts to sanding and much more. You have to get everything right: getting rid of any factory clearcoats, stripping old stain, sanding with the right grits in the right order to close the grains properly so the wood accepts the stain in the way you hoped.
